Occupational Therapy Driving Assessments

Driving assessments are initially conducted in your home to screen your visual, physical, and cognitive abilities in relation to driving, before doing an ‘on-road’ vehicle assessment in your local area, using a specialist driving instructor. This service requires a medical referral.

Vehicle Access and Vehicle Modifications Solutions

If you require physical modifications to access a vehicle as a driver, OR as a passenger, we can assist in this process. For example, assessing and recommending ramps, lifts, wheelchair restraints /docking stations, turning seats, and wheelchair storage solutions.

Functional Assessments

We offer functional assessments in your home to understand your daily living needs, in areas such as personal and domestic care, work, leisure and transport. Usually an assessment will take between 1-2 hours and includes standardised measures. If required, a comprehensive functional assessment report can be provided within 4 weeks of the assessment.

Assistive Technology Advice and Recommendations

We are experts in understanding what equipment can make your life easier – this is known as Assistive Technology for daily living and include things adjustable chairs, high-low beds, pressure mattresses, hoists, commodes, bathroom stools, cooking and eating aids and other devices.

Specialised Wheelchair and Seating Assessments

We conduct wheelchair assessments for a range of indoor and outdoor mobility solutions, such as manual or powered wheelchairs, power add-on devices, and scooters. We are also able to recommend specialist seating for posture and the management and prevention of pressure injuries.

Pacing and Planning Advice

We can offer interventions such as fatigue management, organisational and planning skills, and information technology recommendations if your condition impacts your cognitive functioning, for example after a brain injury, or due to other conditions such as multiple sclerosis.

Funding for Functional Assessments
& Assistive Technology

Eligible people are able to obtain funding for Functional Assessments, Assistive Technology, (and Driving) under the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
The NDIS provides reasonable and necessary funding to people under 65 with a permanent and significant disability to access the supports and services they need to live and enjoy their life. Occupational Therapy is usually funded in a person’s NDIS Plan under ‘Capacity Building / Improved Daily Living Skills’.

GWSOT only work with NDIS clients who are ‘self’ or ‘plan managed’.

Funding for Driving Assessments
and Vehicle Modifications

There are various schemes that will fund driving assessments and vehicle modifications, including the NDIS , iCare NSW, and the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. People need to check their eligibility before the assessment is completed. Self-funding of driving assessments may be an option for some people and a quote can be provided.

A medical referral is required for all driving assessments.
